Early national census reports did not separate iron ore mining from iron production, but most early manufactories were associated with mines.By 1840 the U.S. Census reported iron production from eighty-two furnaces, bloomeries, forges, and rolling mills in East Tennessee; forty-seven in Middle Tennessee; and four in West Tennessee.
